Franklin spoke on Mobile Pedigree(www.Mpedigree.NET), the latest mobile-phone based drug authentication scheme partly invented by Bright Simons, Franklin’s assitant at IMANI and AfricanLiberty.org. Unique codes (somewhat like the codes on mobile phone top-up cards) are embossed on each pack of medicine by participating manufacturers at the plant, and then released onto the market. When a consumer buys an mPedigree-protected drug, they reveal the code and send it in a toll-free SMS to a four-digit and wait for a 3-second response from the mPedigree application server. The response indicates whether the medicine is valid or fake.
