Anti-retrovirals could halt AIDS spread in five years. (BBC)

A top scientist Dr. Brian Williams says South Africa could record no spread of Aids if anti-retroviral drugs and universal testing are adopted. It will cost almost two to three billion dollars per year to administer the drugs to over six million HIV positive people living in South Africa.

Currently only 30% of HIV positive people get access to the drugs. Early detection and treatment can prevent the spread of the virus. An effective vaccine for Aids he said is a long way from being discovered and the use of this drugs and frequent testing are the only ways of reducing the spread of the disease.
