While Kenya’s long time anti-graft campaigner, John Githongo, is asking for amnesty for politicians who self-declare they are corrupt and won’t ‘sin’ any more, the government has decided to pay the wives of Prime Minister and the Vice President up to US$ 6,000 every month for just being spouses.
But Kenya’s opposition dominated-Parliament seems not ready to be taken for granted. It is believed that the amount will only cause more economic hardship for the country since taxpayers are already taking care of the entire cabinet. Many observers see this as political looting the coffers especially as Kenya MPs earn close to US$80,000 when every Kenyan earns less than US$ 500 in per capita terms
